Building a Foundation for Wellness: The Key Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine




I had the pleasure of recently reviewing a workshop by a Lifestyle Medicine Physician on the Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine. These pillars include adopting a whole-food, plant-based eating pattern, engaging in physical activity, reducing stress, getting restorative sleep, nurturing positive social connections, and avoiding risky substances. During the workshop, the physician shared a thought that really resonated with me, and I'd like to share it with you.


As we enter the new year, many people are focused on their New Year’s Resolutions. It's the classic "New Year, New You" mindset. For some reason, the new year seems to inspire people to try to form new habits, shed some pounds, exercise more, and reduce stress. Perhaps it's related to overindulging during the holidays, and the new year feels like a fresh start. However, many New Year's resolutions tend to fizzle out within the first month. Why is that? Despite our good intentions, why do we struggle to succeed?


Perhaps we've been too fixated on the wrong starting points, like nutrition and exercise.


Consider this: if you lack social connections and support from friends and family for your goals, will those goals be easy to achieve? If you're constantly tired due to poor sleep, will you have the energy to prepare healthy meals, or would you rather order takeout? If you're grappling with overwhelming stress from work or financial pressures, the last thing you'll want to do is exercise, right?


The key to long-term success begins with building positive social connections, getting quality sleep, and handling stress effectively.


How to Cultivate Stronger Social Connections


Are you feeling disconnected from those around you? As human beings, we thrive on social connections and the relationships we build. Here are some tips to enhance your social connections and foster meaningful relationships.

But if you're not prioritizing sleep, not managing your stress, and don't have a supportive social group, it'll be tough to maintain good nutrition and physical activity in the long run.
